The person I am staying with in San Diego took me to the beach where these seals live in La Jolla and literally moments before we got there a baby seal had just been born on the beach about 30 feet away. It was only 2 minutes old when we got there and we watched the mother protecting itself and the new born from the sea gulls flying around, which were apparently trying to take the afterbirth from the mother (which they eventually did). In the 20 minutes we stood and watched this scene, we watched the mother teach the baby how to roll over and use its front flippers to get to the water to be safe from the sea gulls/other seals. Watching something in a matter of 15 minutes of life attain mobility and inherently take to the water was so, so awesome. and on top of that baby seals are so damn adorable. love, love nature.
